Mascaras are used to enhance the look of eyelashes. Some lengthen and define, others add volume and dramatic thickness. Some give a deep black effect, while others come in softer versions of brown, or tinted blue or green. They give lashes an extra boost of texture and intensity, often bringing out eyes’ natural color, and adding just the right touch to a makeup look.
For many women, and just about all makeup artists, mascara is a necessity. It makes eyes look wider, more awake, and enhances a woman’s beauty. You can help to create a light, natural look, or a deep, smoky look, all with the right mascara and the right stroke.
Mascara formulas can either be emulsions, which are made up of water, oil, waxes, and a variety of other ingredients, or they can be anhydrous formulas, which are formulated without water, which usually results in waterproof mascara. Waterproof mascaras are of course more durable, in that they are less likely to smudge, flake off, and of course, they offer waterproof protection for your lashes. However, they are usually more difficult to apply (waterproof mascara doesn’t usually glide onto your lashes as easily), and they are very difficult to remove.
Waterproof mascara should really only be applied for situations that need waterproof protection, for instance, if you like to have mascara on during outside activities, or a trip to the beach. Otherwise, the application and especially the removal of waterproof mascaras are very harsh on your lashes. It sometimes takes several makeup remover applications before the mascara even seems like it’s finally starting to come off. Because of this, your lashes go through a lot of “wear and tear” during the removal process, and often get damaged, or fall out. Waterproof mascara takes a lot of elbow grease to remove, so choose to apply this mascara sparingly, and only when really necessary.
Non-waterproof mascara on the other hand, usually has a smoother application, and is much easier to remove. This is great for most occasions (work, errands, nights out). Most mascaras are buildable, allowing you to apply a light, natural look for work, but for a more dramatic look, you can apply several coats to really thicken, darken, and volumize your lashes. Sometimes non-waterproof mascara can smudge or flake-off, but in general, companies have been better about formulating non-waterproof mascaras that have better wear.
If you find yourself in a situation where waterproof mascara is necessary, Bioelements has a makeup remover that will make the removal process a lot less troublesome.
Makeup Dissolver – the name says it all. This makeup remover is specifically designed to quickly remove all traces of makeup, including stubborn mascara. It is oil-free, and contains anti-inflammatory extracts to calm, soothe and prep face for cleansing.
Bioelements also has their Makeup Dissolver Perfected, which contains their unique MariBright Complex – a calming blend of marigold and eyebright natural extracts. This formula also removes all traces makeup, even water-resistant formulas, without stinging eyes, and leaves you with comfortable, soft skin.
